Extreme Heat Wave Intensifies on West Coast
Scorching Temperatures Expected Over Weekend
No Relief in Sight for Days
A dangerous and prolonged heat wave is gripping the West Coast, bringing with it scorching temperatures and no relief in sight for days. From Oregon to California to Arizona, several cities have recorded record-breaking temperatures in recent days.
The Pacific Northwest, which has experienced relatively mild summers in recent years, is bearing the brunt of the heat wave. Portland, Oregon, reached a blistering 112 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, breaking a 100-year-old record. Seattle, Washington, hit 94 degrees Fahrenheit, tying its all-time high.
California is also sweltering. A punishing heat wave is expected to hit today and peak over the weekend, bringing triple-digit temperatures to the state. Excessive heat warnings and watches are in effect for much of California starting today through the end of the week and weekend.
The relentless heat is a major health concern, particularly for the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing conditions. Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
Residents are urged to take precautions to stay cool and avoid heat-related illness, such as staying indoors in air-conditioned areas, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. Those who must go outside should wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade.
